ISBN 968-232313-4.[Official Review: Analyzes reggae song lyrics from the 1970s to identify the link between reggae music and social and historic processes of Jamaica. Author finds that while the relation between reggae and Jamaican society is widely acknowledged, studies on this relation have been fragmented and dispersed. He describes how the effects of slavery remained present in Jamaica's postabolition and postcolonial history. As a response to this inequality social resistance and Pan-African movements arose. He pays special attention to the sociopolitical developments of the 1960s and 1970s in order to encadre the song lyrics. He discusses how reggae was really a social phenomenon, and soon became a medium for the oppressed, with strong Rastafarian influence. This coincided with anti-Rastafari government policies and the related marginalization of music. Thus contextualized, he analyzes the historical, political, social, and religious aspects of song lyrics by different artists.]
